Kenai Dominates East Coast Sailing Circuit

Chris and Karen Lewis along with LYC crew members Al Goethe, Bill Zartler and Mike McGagh won the IRC 2 class in the Marblehead to Halifax Race, the "Granddaddy of Ocean Races" and finished third overall in the IRC fleet.  Kenai also brought home the coveted Chelsea Clock Trophy for best combined results in the Marblehead to Halifax and Annapolis to Newport races.

The Lewis' finished second in their J-44 Kenai in the IRC 2 class in the Annapolis to Newport Race. They won first out of the bay and then best combined for Newport to Bermuda and Annapolis to Newport.  LYC members J.D. Hill and Bill Zartler were onboard Kenai. The Lewis’ J-44 was narrowly beaten after fighting a 500 mile long battle against Orion, in which they passed each other twice. The navigator for Orion was Libby Greenhalgh, who is also the navigator for the all-women Volvo Ocean Race entry Team SCA.

In the 163rd Annual New York Yacht Club Regatta, Kenai switched to the One-Design division and won the J-44 class. She competed against six identical J-44s using class sails. Kenai placed first in the first three races and second in the next three. Several LYC members were onboard, including Susan and J.D. Hill, Mike McGagh, and Kevin Hayes.

Kenai had another strong finish at Block Island Race Week for the J-44 North American Championships. The Lewis' boat won first place on Friday and first place overall. At the start of the last race day, Kenai was down 4 points against Challenge IV. When Kenai won race 7, the lead was decreased to 3 points. After the final race, Kenai and Challenge IV were tied with 21 points each. Kenai won the tiebreaker because she had more first-place wins. Mike McGagh was also onboard. Be sure to congratulate the Kenai crew when you see them!
