A Message From Our 2017 Commodore, Jim WintonLakewood Yacht Club (LYC), in Seabrook, Texas, situated on the shores of Clear Lake and Galveston Bay, is celebrating its 62nd year as a private, member-owned yacht club. LYC is a very special place, being one of the few yacht clubs in the United States sitting on its own property of 38 acres with its own marina of greater than 300 rentable slips. As Commodore for 2017, I welcome you to LYC and am looking forward to a great year.
Our Club provides a family-friendly atmosphere, and our members consider Lakewood as part of their family, their home away from home. We know that members come here to have fun and enjoy themselves, so we provide a wide array of entertaining activities for everyone to enjoy or get involved.
One of the things that make this Club and boating on the Gulf Coast so special is that it is a year-round operation; LYC runs full-throttle almost all year long. Included among the many entertainment events hosted by LYC each year are major occasions such as the Commodore’s Ball, Blessing of the Fleet and the annual Commodore’s Cruise. But whether our members are enjoying the signature events or entertaining guests in the Clubhouse, conducting a business meeting in one of our beautiful meeting rooms, participating in one of our various committees or Club activities, racing in one of our competitive regattas or simply enjoying a relaxing day on their boat, LYC’s beauty and atmosphere provide a reliable sanctuary. While LYC’s elected Board of Directors implements policies and rules, the Club’s lifeblood is its committees. One must attend the annual LYC Calendar Meeting to appreciate fully the torrid pace around the Club. This year will be no exception as the Entertainment, Lakewood South, Cruise, Captain’s Roundtable, Keels & Wheels, Race and Book Review Committees each have special activities planned all year. The Ladies Association and Mosquitos also have an active calendar of events. And then there are the Seahorses, our junior sailing program. Our Seahorses stay busy year round competing in youth regattas literally around the world, and bringing home the “hardware” from the four corners of the globe. Finally, we have a number of non-committee “clubs” such as the bridge, poker and our newly forming SCUBA club to keep you busy. Other committees are part of the “management” of the Club, including Membership, Sheds, Piers and Harbors, House, Planning, Race, Race Sponsorship, Finance and Growth and Retention.
We strive to exceed our members’ expectations at every visit with excellent service, a caring and friendly staff, and outstanding amenities and boating and social activities that foster relationships that last a lifetime.
We invite you to visit our Club and find out for yourself why our members say “Life is better at Lakewood.”Sincerely,
J.C. WintonJim WintonCommodore, 2017
