Watt Duffy III | Sailing DirectorAs Sailing Director, I am responsible for managing the best group of coaches in the region. We will strive to find the needs and desires of the membership, then create a program that will meet and beat their expectations. I have the honor of working with many volunteers and the thrill of coaching sailors of all ages. Lakewood can count on our staff no matter what age or skill level you might be. I have lived here in Lazy Bend on the lake since 2005, and worked for Lakewood as a coach since 2008. My wife, Priscilla and my two daughters Holland and Sophie, have been part of Lakewood in many ways. I look forward to meeting you and discovering your sailing passion.
Bernat Gali Bou | Racing & Head Opti Coach
Bernat Galí Bou is a Top National and International Youth Sailing Coach from Barcelona, Spain who joins Lakewood as the new Racing and Head Opti Coach. Bernat started sailing Optis at the age of 8 near Barcelona and placed consistently in the Top 20 on the National Rankings. He then moved to Lasers where he sailed from Laser 4.7 to Radial and full Rig, getting his best results on Laser Radial. Twice he became National Champion, getting outstanding results at Europeans and Worlds, and finishing in the Top 25 for several years. Bernat started a Pre-Olympic campaign when he was 18, and decided to pursue coaching full-time when he reached 21. Starting as Head Coach at Cambrils Yacht Club in Spain, Bernat won the reputation of one of the most talented coaches across Spain. Deciding to further develop his international career, he relocated to Southeast Asia to coach the Myanmar Laser National Team. After participating in the 37th SEA Games, he was finally selected as the Head Coach at Queen Charlotte Yacht Club in New Zealand, followed by Head Coach at Niantic Bay Yacht Club in Connecticut. Bernat's trainees enjoy tremendous success, including Top 10 Spanish National finishes, International regatta placements, and Top 15 finishes in the Europeans and Worlds. His most recent coaching wins include Món Cañellas, Laser Radial U21 runner-up at the 2015 Worlds, and 1st and 3rd places at the New Zealand Laser Radial Nationals.
MacKenzie McGuckin | Sailing Program Manager/Coach
Coming from a sailing and boating family, I have had the privilege to grow up in a coastal environment at the Jersey Shore and be around boats. At age 8, I started in our Junior Sailing program at the Ocean City Yacht Club and raced my Opti throughout New Jersey, then went on to race Lasers, Club 420s and One Design Boats all through high school and college. I have been coaching sailing since I was old enough to meet the age requirement to obtain my USSA Level 1 Sailing Certification and shortly after obtained my USSA Level 3 Certification when I began High School coaching. Prior to joining Lakewood Yacht Club as the Program Manager, I was the Head Green Fleet coach at Lauderdale Yacht Club in Fort Lauderdale, FL.
As the Program Manager, I hope to strengthen and grow participation across all of our fleets. I also know the importance of engaging parents and sailors to foster continued participation and breed lifelong sailors. I am very excited to be a part of the Lakewood Yacht Club team and I look forward to motivating, inspiring, and igniting our Junior Sailors’ passions while promoting a safe and positive learning environment. I want to do more than introduce the sport of sailing, I also want to instill confidence in each sailor, along with providing them with the proper skill sets that will last them a lifetime full of sailing or wherever the sport may take them. “Sheet in and Max out!”
