Nutrias

Age: 4 - 6 years old

Class Description: Our Nutria class is designed to give the youngest sailors in our program an introduction to Clear Lake and sailing. Flying Juniors and Optimists will be provided for instruction. The class is designed for sailors entering Kindergarten to graduating second grade. Emphasis will be placed on fun, teamwork, and enjoying our lake. The objective of the Nutria class is to get sailors comfortable with being in a new and exciting environment by building confidence and sense of security. This course will have no racing involved and is strictly an introduction level class. Sailors in this group will learn how to control a sailboat using simple games and challenges. They will learn elementary skills such as rigging and de-rigging a boat, tying knots, and proper terminology. Have your young sailor join the fun and get acquainted with the fantastic sport of sailing.

Prerequisites: No sailing experience necessary.  Must be fully potty-trained.

Practice Times: Wednesday 3:30 – 6 PM, Saturday 9 – 11 AM, Sunday 9 – 11 AM

Fall Registration Fees: $0 member / $400 non-member 


Lime Fleet

Age: 7 - 12 years old 

Class Description: This program is ideally suited for sailors 7 years old and up (no more than 110 lbs). The Lime Fleet will focus on safety, fun, and learning the basic skills needed to sail. Sailors in the Lime fleet should be comfortable going out on the water in boats and should have had some previous experience sailing an Optimist from our Nutria Class or elsewhere. The Lime Fleet will introduce the beginner to sailing, teaching water safety, rigging and basic boat handling under a Coach's direction. The goal is to develop a sailor that has sufficient knowledge and skills to sail safely and competently in winds up to 12 knots or more. These sailors will learn the general knowledge of sailing through games and fun activities. Both free sailing and introductory racing will be taught. Skills introduced in the Nutria program will be built upon, including but not limited to: Wind awareness, sailing terminology, sail trim, weather, knots, rules of racing, basic parts of the boat, tacking and gybing, equipment maintenance, upwind sailing, and points of sail. 

Prerequisites: Completion of the Nutria Class is preferred but not mandatory.

Practice Times: Thursday 3:30 – 7 PM, Saturday 12 – 5 PM, Sunday 12 – 5 PM

Green Fleet 

Age: 7 – 12 years old 

Class Description: Green Fleet is our introductory racing team. Green fleet will compete primarily in local regattas around the Houston areas as well as a few major events. This program will be a stepping stone for sailors who want to become more involved in a more competitive at a higher racing level. Parents are expected to volunteer time to drive to various local events so sailors may be exposed to regatta formats and different sailing venues and conditions. This program is designed for sailors over 7 years old and no more than 110 lbs. The Green Fleet will build self-esteem and increase physical and mental alertness and stamina. Sailors will be introduced to competitive sailing and will gain the core skills necessary to eventually graduate to the Silver Fleet while also being comfortable to sail in up to 18 knots of wind. To gain these skill coaches will focus on refining boat handling and practicing other skills needed to become proficient racers, including: starting, the racing rules of sailing, using Telltales, basic racing tactics, advanced sailing terminology, and launching on own. * Participants in the Green Fleet will be invited by Coach MacKenzie, an invitation only fleet. 

Prerequisites: Completion of Lime Fleet or the equivalent.

Practice Times: Wednesdays 3:30 – 6 PM, Thursdays 3:30 – 7 PM, Saturdays 12 – 5 PM, Sundays 10 AM – 5 PM

Fall Registration Fees: $200 Member / $600 Nonmember


Silver Fleet 

Age: 10 – 15 years old 

Class Description: Silver Fleet sailors should be proficient in the general knowledge of sailing, both racing and free sailing will be taught. By the end of the class the student should feel comfortable in up to 20 knots of wind. Boat maintenance and knot tying will be demonstrated and practiced. Silver Fleet sailors are encouraged to travel to away regattas to broaden their skills, learn life lessons such as teamwork, communication, and responsibilities, as well as meet new friends. Silver Fleet sailors must attend all Green Fleet practices and Silver Fleet practices. These sailors will compete in either Green, White, Blue or Red Fleets depending on their age and experience to both interclub racing and traveling events. * Participants in the Silver Fleet will be invited by Coach Bernat and Coach MacKenzie, an invitation only fleet. 

Prerequisites: Completion of Green Fleet or equivalent.

Practice Times: Wednesdays 3:30 – 6 PM, Thursdays 3:30 – 7 PM, Saturdays 9 – 4 PM, Sunday 10 – 5 PM

Gold Fleet 

Age: 10 – 15 years old 

Class Description: Gold Fleet is a level where the sailors focus on developing and cultivating the critical boat-handling, boat-speed, physical and mental stamina, and boat-tuning skills needed to excel in national and international competition. Long practices in a wide range of wind and sea conditions combined with intense workouts will demand high levels of maturity, focus, and dedication. Gold Fleet will work both on Fleet and Team Racing. During classroom lectures, Gold Fleet sailors will acquire the theoretical knowledge about racing strategies and tactics, rules interpretation, and sailing physics. Video and chalk-talks will be used to analyze sailors' individual techniques and solutions in various situations. Weather permitting, all of the weekend practices will be in the bay off the coast of Kemah. Weekday practices will be out front of the Lakewood Yacht Club seawall in Clear Lake. Sailors should come prepared to work out on any given day with running shoes and swim goggles. The sailors are expected to compete at USODA events and attempt to qualify for the US National Team in order to represent the USA and LYC at international events. The sailor will feel comfortable in up to 25+ knots of wind and many difficult sailing conditions. Advanced rigging, tuning and boat repairs as well as fairing boards and hulls will be demonstrated and practiced. Team Racing sailors will be invited by Coach Bernat and his assistant. Spots on the Team Race team will be based on practice attendance, attitude, dedication, and consistency of results while fleet racing. (These sailors will compete in either White, Blue, or Red Fleet depending on their age at both interclub racing and traveling regattas). Coach Bernat will lead training session with a very experienced staff. * Participants in the Gold Fleet are limited to Team Trial qualified sailors, or sailors invited by Coach Bernat. An invitation only fleet.

Practice Times: Tuesdays 3:30 – 7 PM, Thursdays 3:30 – 7 PM, Saturdays 9 AM – 4 PM, Sundays 9 AM – 4 PM

Laser Greenhorn 

Class Description: Laser Greenhorn is a program designed for beginner Laser 4.7 and Laser Radial sailors. Sailors will focus on skills needed to advance to the next level (Laser Radical). Weekday practices will be held in Clear Lake and weekend practices will be held in the bay (weather permitting). Training will introduce boat handling, boat speed, sail trim, one design tactics and strategy, video analysis and age-appropriate conditioning and fitness. Height, weight and maturity are a key factor to the acceptance to the Laser 4.7 Greenhorn team. These sailors should be over 100 lbs. to join this fleet. 4.7, should be over 130 lbs. to join the Radial class and Full rig should be over 175. This is a basic sailing course so some sailors will be very new to the sport and take longer to graduate others with more experience. Coach Duffy will be trusted to pick that time when the sailor is ready to graduate.

Practice Times: Fridays 3:30 – 7 PM, Saturdays 10 AM – 2 PM, Sundays 10 AM – 2 PM

Laser Radical 

Class Description: Laser Radical is designed for the more advanced Laser 4.7, Radial and Laser Full Rigs. This team will be required to travel to away events. This is not a learn-to-sail program. All sailors must have sufficient knowledge of sailing and dinghy sailing and racing experience. Weekday practices will be held in Clear Lake and weekend practices will be held in the bay, weather permitting. Training will expand on boat handling, boat speed, physics of sailing and weather, sail trim, one design tactics and strategy, video analysis and age-appropriate conditioning and fitness. Other topics will include nutrition, event preparation, weather strategy and mental focus. Boat maintenance and care will be demonstrated. This team is height and weight sensitive due to the nature of the Laser. While we intend to have serious training we also strive for fantastic fun. Join this fleet for the experience and training needed to compete on the regional, national, and international. * Participants in the Laser Radical class are invited by Coach Duffy. An invitation only fleet. 

Prerequisites: Completion of Laser Greenhorn or the equivalent.

Practice Times: Tuesday 3:30 – 7 PM, Saturdays 8:30 AM – 3 PM, Sundays 8:30 AM – 3 PM

Club 420 

Class Description: The Club 420 program is committed to the pursuit of Club 420 racing. Skipper and crew combinations will change several times during the season unless signing up as a pair. The students spend time learning and trying out each position while their coach will evaluate their individual abilities and ideal team placements. We ask that parents share in our trust of the Lakewood Yacht Club Coaching Staff and support their decisions. The club 420 is a fun fast boat to sail, athletics and balance becomes more important. Training will include boat handling, boat speed, physics of sailing and weather, sail trim, one design tactics and strategy, video analysis and age-appropriate conditioning and fitness. This team will be expected to travel to regattas and pursue regional, national and international competition. While we intend to have serious training we also strive for fantastic fun. 

Prerequisites: Some sailing preferred, but not necessary.

Practice Times: Thursdays 3:30 – 7 PM, Saturdays 8:30 AM – 3 PM, Sunday 8:30 AM – 3 PM

Seafaring 

Age: 10 to 18 years old 

Class Description: This course is designed to provide fun, safe, exposure to the water through a range of sailboats and STEM activities. This class is ideal for sailors ages 10-18 with limited to intermediate sailing experience who enjoy on-the-water fun without competitive racing. The focus of the class will be to prepare sailors for a lifetime of sailing and seamanship on the lake, while enjoying sailing. Skills to be taught include, but are not limited to: weather and safety, how to operate a boat safely and confidently, wind awareness and direction, basic parts of the boat and controls, launching, retrieving and docking, environmental stewardship, knot tying, rigging and sailing terminology, and seamanship.

Prerequisites: No experience needed.

Practice Times: Tuesday 3:30 – 7 PM, Wednesday 3:30 – 7 PM

Fall Registration Fees: $100 Member / $400 Non-Member


Pink Fleet 

Class Description: All girls fleet that will help girls meet each other in the Seahorse Community as well as show our young female sailors that girls can sail. This group will meet once a month on Fridays with two different time slots for appropriate age levels. Fun sailing and activities will take place during these events. 

Meeting Times: 10 & UNDER: 4 – 6 PM, 11 & OLDER: 6 – 8 PM

Prerequisites: No experience needed.
