Youth sailing at Lakewood Yacht Club doesn’t stop with the end of summer.  All our classes and fleets continue to practice and compete throughout the year.

Opti Learn to Sail

Eligibility: Participants must be 6 years of age at the beginning of the session. Number of participants is limited; sailors will be accepted on first come, first served basis.

Cost: Opti Learn to Sail is free for LYC members.  Sessions are available to non-members for $200.

Practice Schedule:Saturday / Sunday, 9 a.m. – 11 a.m.


Learn to Sail programs are designed for young sailors ages 6 and up that have no or very limited sailing experience. Low sailor to instructor ratio ensures that the classes are safe and fun. The program runs both classroom lessons and on the water practices in the form of games and other kid friendly activities. The objective is to give young sailors their first opportunity to enjoy safe boating and sailing in particular, meet new friends, and get familiar with the marine environment.



Opti Green Fleet: Introduction to Racing

Optimist Green Fleet: $100/Member or $350/Non-Member

Practice Schedule: Tuesday, 4 p.m. - 6 p.m.  and Saturday / Sunday, 12 p.m. - 4 p.m.

Focal Events: LYC Cold Front Series, TSA Regattas


The objective of this group is to make a transition from the Learn to Sail program into our racing team and to participate in select TSA events. Sailors will focus on understanding the basic principles of racing such as starts, course rules, etc. Getting accustomed to the racing environment and improvement of boat handling skills will be the primary objective.



Intermediate Optimist Racing

Intermediate Optimist Racing: $150/Member or $450/Non-Member

Focal Events: TSA events, USODA Midwinters, International Orange Bowl Regatta.

Practice Schedule: Thursday after school.  Saturday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.  Sunday, 12 p.m. - 4 p.m.

Main Coach: Bernat Gali


This is a program for sailors who have competed in the green fleet and are almost ready or have moved on to RWB competition. Practices will be led by assistant coaches with interaction with the head coach and advanced fleet. Sailors in this group will work on proper rigging, sailing techniques, basic tactical and strategic skills in both fleet and team racing. The group will be preparing to compete in TSA events as well as in selected USODA regattas.



Advanced Optimist Racing  

Advanced Optimist Racing: $200/Member or $550/Non-Member

Focal Events: USODA Championships, Orange Bowl Regatta, Team Race Midwinters.

Practice schedule: Thursday after school.  Saturday / Sunday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Main Coach: Bernat Gali


This is a program for Opti sailors who want to bring their skills to the most competitive level. In order to participate in this group a sailor must be ready to make a push both on and off the water. Each practice will include a workout, detailed boat rigging, extended drills with emphasis on both technical and physical aspect of sailing. In the classroom the sailors will learn from videos, lectures and guest speakers on how to prepare to succeed in major national and international events.



Laser Racing

Laser Racing: $200/Member or $550/Non-Member

Practice Schedule: Saturday / Sunday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.


This is a competitive Laser program for sailors who wish to compete in TSA, National and International sailing regattas. In order to take part in the program each sailor has to be proficient at sailing Laser 4.7, Radial or Full rig in all wind conditions and be familiar with racing procedures.



420 Racing

Club 420 Racing: $200/Member or $550/Non-Member

Practice Schedule: Saturday / Sunday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.


This is a competitive 420 program for sailors who wish to compete in TSA, National and International sailing regattas. In order to take part in the program each sailor has to be proficient at sailing a 420 in all wind conditions and be familiar with racing procedures.
