Get Ready for Blessing of the Fleet

Keeping with 61 years of tradition, Lakewood Yacht Club prepares to formally celebrate the Blessing of the 2016 Fleet. One of the most celebrated events of the year, the Blessing of the Fleet christens participating vessels and welcomes the boats into the club fleet for the opening of the coming sailing season.

Members are sparing no expense gearing up for the regalia. As one of the club’s more spectacular events of Spring, the grounds and boats will be decorated and dressed with ribbons, flags, and flowers in full bloom. Boats will "dress ship," as they're scrubbed up, waxed, and adorned with festive signal flags.

Club fashion will be on parade as the ceremonies get underway. Ladies excitedly shop for classy nautical attire, while the men lay aside their best white slacks and dark blazers for the occasion. Wide-brimmed sun hats will feature prominently, along with classic boat shoes, striped slip-ons, and flat sandals.

Traditional Irish bagpipers will entertain for the occasion along with an award-winning marching band. Live cannon fire will accompany the regal display, while the Master of Ceremonies invokes the safety and good fortune of fleet vessels throughout the year.

Members whose boats are blessed will be welcomed into the club yachting fleet. They each receive a commemorative plaque, the trademark Lakewood burgee, and a bottle of champagne to "bathe the bow."

Club volunteers work tirelessly throughout the year to plan the Blessing of the Fleet celebration. Functions and socials will be in full swing the entire weekend. Event activities include a poolside soiree, a formal champagne brunch, and the "Tour de Fleet" after the blessing.

The formal Blessing of the Fleet ceremony begins on Sunday, March 20 and is open to all members and their guests.
