How to Gear Up for Summer at Lakewood Yacht Club
The Lakewood Ladies Association kicks off the mighty month of May with an extended trip to New Orleans! Every year the ladies of Lakewood enjoy a week of girl-time together at an exciting travel destination. This year, they're looking forward to the New Orleans Cooking School, plantation tours, and the World War II Museum.

As the kickoff month for the racing season, May packs in three major races for competitive sailors to enjoy. The Heald Bank race starts off the season with an offshore dual course in the Galveston Jetties. A week later, the Serralles Shoe Regatta follows with a dual course, multi-class race in Galveston Bay. On-shore spectators get to enjoy live entertainment by Southbound. And finally, Lakewood will host the J/70 North American Championship from May 19-22 in Galveston Bay.

This month's book review selection will focus on "The Wright Brothers," by David McCullough. Jim Hall leads the book review discussion about the dramatic behind-the-scenes story surrounding the courageous brothers who taught the world how to fly.

Get ready for the Kentucky Derby! Every year, members look forward to gathering in the Lounge to sip a mint julep and debate over winning hopefuls. Special prizes go to the best derby hat and the best Colonel Sanders look-alike. The 142nd race is on, and members are ready to "place their bets."

Mother's Day brings loved ones together at Lakewood. Members and their guests celebrate Mom's big day with a luxurious buffet unlike any other. This year, Executive Chef Cristy has prepared an array of irresistible menu stations. For the hearty appetites, prime rib and roast turkey will be piping hot at the carving station. If you're in the mood for breakfast, try the eggs Benedict with hollandaise sauce or a frittata at the omelet bar. The pastas this year are decadent as always accompanied with smoked salmon and specialty salads. And don't forget to leave room for dessert!

Winding down the month, the Lakewood Cruisers will take a leisurely weekend cruise to Pelican Rest in Galveston Island's Offatts Bayou. Boaters get to soak up the last few cool days before summer by relaxing on the beach and strolling through the local shops and galleries. There's nothing like a sunset with a cool drink, great friends, and music on the boat!

I'm thrilled to be a part of Lakewood's marketing team! From an early age, I started showing signs of becoming an auspicious writing geek. Today, I'm a columnist for Huffington Post, Entrepreneur Magazine, and Business Insider. I get excited about exploring new ideas, communicating in a creative way, and solving problems that stump me. It's especially thrilling that I get to do all this in a place that personifies one of my greatest loves -- nature and the outdoors. I'm looking forward to growing our digital marketing techniques and meeting your communications needs with excellence!
