Fifteen of Lakewood Yacht Club’s youth sailors participated in the USODA Team Trials, the most important regatta of the year for Optimist sailors, at Brant Beach Yacht Club in New Jersey May 6-14. Before racing in the USODA Team Trials, racers had to qualify in different events around the United States.
“Conditions were very similar to what we enjoy in Galveston Bay during the year here at Lakewood,” LYC Head Coach Bernat Gali said. “Eight LYC sailors qualified for the final round in the Gold Fleet and the remaining seven qualified for the Silver Fleets."
Scott Mather and Tony Slowik finished 18th and 19th respectively, and will both represent Team USA in the next IODA North American Championships in Toronto in early July.
Because Zittrer, Mather and Slowik finished in the top 20, they earned the great honor to join the US Opti National Team next year.
Lucas Tenrreiro and Parker Tyson finished 33rd and 34th respectively and will be part of the US Opti Development Team.
The remaining three Lakewood sailors in Gold Fleet were Emma McInnis, Eric Jayawant and Kelly Bates. McInnis finished 62nd; Jayawant finished 64th overall and will join Tenrreiro and Tyson on the US Opti Development Team next year. Bates finished in 73rd place overall.
Sheridan Shaw was our top finisher in Silver Fleet. She finished 4th overall and 1st Girl. Stephen Momeier finished 7th overall and Piotr Smieja got 17th overall. Emilie Janzen finished 32nd overall. Nicky Abate placed 69th, while Ethan Polsen finished 76th. Ava Anderson closed the Lakewood representation finishing 127th overall. Congratulations to all of our sailors; we are so proud of you.
