What an honor it was for Lakewood to host the reunion of the original astronauts’ wives as well as NASA’s first nurse! Last Saturday night the group of 24 ladies gathered for dinner and drinks in the club’s chart room. The women met many years ago when their husbands were involved in the missions to the moon and they have been friends ever since.
During that time, the astronauts and their families lived in neighborhoods in Clear Lake City, El Lago and Seabrook. In fact, in 1964 and 1965, some of the astronauts and their wives lived on Lakewood property in cabanas until facilities were built at NASA. Lakewood gave the families honorary memberships, which gave them full access to the club. In the years since the first missions to the moon, these women have met up many times, but this was their first reunion in eight years. They traveled from all over the United States to get together for laughs, memories and good conversation.
Some of the women in attendance were Sue Bean (Alan: Apollo 12, Skylab 3), Barbara Cernan Butler (Eugene: Gemini 9A, Apollo 10, Apollo 17), Marie Fullerton (Charle: STS-3, STS-51-F), Marilyn Lovell (Jim: Gemini 7, Gemini 12, Apollo 8, Apollo 13), Pat Musgrave (Story: STS-6, STS-51-F, STS-33, STS-44, STS-61, STS-80) and Claire Schweickart Whitfield (Rusty: Apollo 9).
