J/122 Second Star voyaged across the Gulf of Mexico racking up 2,000 miles on its seven week journey. Not only did Second Star owners, J.D. and Susan Hill race in some of the most prestigious international regattas, but they also earned some big wins. First, they were named Mount Gay Rum Boat of the Day en route to winning the ORC division of Quantum Key West Race Week. Although just one point separated them from the reigning ORC World Champions on High Noise, the Hills managed to gain a two second lead in the final race to defeat the Italian team.
After Key West Race Week, the Hills participated in the Conch Republic Cup, a race from Key West to Varadero, Cuba where another first place finish will bring the Michele Geslin Memorial Cup to LYC! While there, J.D. and Susan had the opportunity to sightsee and interact with the friendly and welcoming people of Cuba.
The Hills would like to thank those who have provided support, encouragement, mentoring, advice or assistance along their journey, as well as their sailing friends, sailmakers, riggers, other teams/competitors and ground support. Participation in races like J/Fest Southwest and the Shoe Regatta greatly prepared them for Key West Race Week. Similarly, the offshore races sponsored by Lakewood and Galveston Bay Cruising Association strengthened their skills for the trip across the Gulf of Mexico.
